Holly Robinson PeeteΒ has sent her support to Mark Curry , her former co-star in the sitcom HTML1, after Mark Curry experienced racism at a Colorado hotel.
Peete who played opposite actor/comedian Mr. Cooper in the 1990s sitcom Hungin’ with Mr. Cooper called the incident “so insulting” and unacceptable in a thread of tweets on Saturday.Β Peete said that Mark was singled out only because he is a Black male.Β I’m sorry that this happened.
Curry posted his experience at Colorado Springs’ Mining Exchange A Wyndham Grand Hotel & Spa on Instagram.Β Curry, who is in Colorado Springs for a tour of comedy, had a coffee in the hotel lobby and a man, whom he described as the security head, approached him.
The man in the 26 minute video refused to leave until he was sure that Curry had been invited.Β Curry stated that if you are Black in Colorado Springs you cannot be in the hotel lobby.Β “Wow!Β “This is insane, isnβt it?”Β Curry was accused by another employee who had been standing guard of playing the race card when he asked about the surveillance.
Curry also documented in another video the men who followed him throughout the hotel.Β Curry then approached the reception desk and told a woman he wanted to call the police because the security guard refused to provide any ID, but was still following him.Β I would call the police about this man for following me.Β Curry said to the woman, “I don’t even know his name,” while live streaming the event.Β Curry was told by the woman behind the desk that the man in question was an engineer and asked if the comedian had been invited to the hotel “for his safety.”
Curry said later from his hotel. “A Black Man can’t Go Nowhere in America” Curry.Β Curry said that he was leaving the hotel to incorporate his experience into his next show.Β He captioned his video: “Black man in a hotel, it is impossible for him to have a room.”Β “No, I’m in a suite!”Β He approaches me without a badge.Β “I don’t even know this man.”
A hotel representative responded to a request for comment on Sunday by saying that the Mining Exchange “is committed to creating a space where all employees and guests feel safe.”Β In the statement, it was stated that “We regret this incident, and we have offered Mr. Curry not only our sincere apology, but also a refund for his entire stay, and an invitation to come back at any time, free of charge.”
In a statement, the hotel said it would also use this time to “revisit training with staff to help ensure that all interactions reflect our company values.”
A representative of the hotel later told EW that “employees who were involved in this case have been suspended pending further investigations.”
