Emily Blunt opens up on the difficult production of 2014’s sci-fi film Edge of Tomorrow, and the very direct comments made by her costar Tom Cruise.
She recalled all the difficult stunts she had to do on Jason Bateman’s smartLess podcast, which will be broadcast to a larger audience next Monday. Cruise also told her “stop being a p—y,” after she voiced some concern about a particular shoot.
Both actors wore huge robotic suits to play soldiers in a film that also featured Bill Paxton, Brendan Gleeson and other stars. Blunt stated that the costume would have been better if it had been CGI, but they wanted to make sure we did it in a practical and tactile manner. When you hear the term ‘tactile’, you might think it sounds cozy and nice. “These suits were not at all cozy.”
The suit of Blunt weighed approximately 85 pounds. She said, “It felt so heavy.” The first time I wore it, I started crying in front Tom. He didn’t really know what to say. He stared me down. Tom, I don’t know how I will get through this shooting, and I started crying. “I am just feeling panicky.” I replied. “He just stood there for quite a while, not sure what to say, before saying, “Come on! Stop being such an idiot, okay?”
Blunt said that she laughed at the comment, and they were both able to complete the shoot. However, “the training” was very intense. She said that she hurt herself while performing a stunt. She recalled, “I was doing this aerial stunt and it was supposed to be landing on my shoulder. I ended up on my face.”
A follow-up to the movie was announced for 2019. Blunt, Cruise and others are reported to be reprising their roles. Blunt said to EW in 2013 that she didn’t know what it looked like. However, she admitted to having read it. She said, “I don’t really know where it will go. It was a great script.” I read a really good script, but now it is a question of whether or not that will happen. “I don’t know the answer to that.”
