Sinbad reaches out to the public for help on his road to recovery following an ischemic stroke that he suffered in 2020.
On Monday, two years after the initial health scare the star of Jingle All the Way posted on Instagram a picture showing him learning to walk again. The caption provided an updated on the comic’s health, and included a donation page link for anyone wishing to cover his medical costs.
The comedian’s family released a statement explaining that Sinbad (born David Adkins) suffered a stroke in October 2020 due to a blood-clot travelling from his heart into his brain. His prognosis was initially “very positive” following a successful thrombectomy. However, a second clot developed the next morning, and the situation quickly deteriorated.
Sinbad underwent a successful second thrombectomy in order to remove the blood clot. However, “it was more difficult for him” than his first operation. Later, he was transferred to Los Angeles’ Cedars-Sinai Medical Center where doctors discovered that his brain began to swell. Doctors noticed that a bleeding had occurred during a craniotomy performed to reduce the pressure. He was then placed in a Medically Induced Coma at the Neuro-ICU.
They shared, “Our hearts are devastated.” The road to recovery was difficult and confusing for the family.
Sinbad’s parents began to realize the seriousness of Sinbad’s health problem in the weeks that followed. They noted his inability to “move his side” or to simply “hold his head up.” The actor, who was slowly removed from the ventilator in April 2021, began his physical, occupational and speech therapy at the California Rehabilitation Institute.

Sinbad returned home to his family in July 2021, two months and nine months following the stroke. He continues his therapy and is fighting to gain every inch. The family said that his progress was nothing less than remarkable. His limbs, which were once said to be “dead”, are now reviving and he is taking steps to learn how to walk. “I’m not finished,” he said. “I will fight until I am able to walk across the stage once again.”
The family stated that “typical survival rates” for this kind of illness are “approximately 30 percent.” They added, “Sinbad already beat the odds, and has made substantial progress beyond anything anyone could have expected. But there is still a long way to go.”
The family is asking for financial help because paying for the recovery of their son has “taken a toll” on them.
The statement ended with “The family is convinced, without exception that Sinbad’s here today because of all the prayers of those who love and know him.” We are forever grateful. The love you all have shown and your memories of the way he touched each of you are not unheard or unseen. You are appreciated. “You have inspired his family and lifted up his spirit along the way.”
Sinbad’s message is also featured on the donation website. Thank God for all He has given you even if you didn’t get everything you wanted. “Thank God for your family, and hold the people you love as long as you can,” wrote he. We need to be together in order to make it through. Can’t wait for you to all see me again. “As always, keep it funky and stay prayed-up.”
After his social media post, a few celebrities shared their love with the A Different World star, including Judd Apatow, Gabrielle Union, as well as the Earth, Wind & Fire band. India.Arie, a musician from India., wrote: “Sending BIG LOVE and HUGE THANKS SINBAD.”
